Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 Filipino Martial Arts – Jan 13, 2010
I started training in JKD/FMA 17 years ago. I discovered Legacy Martial Arts six months ago and after watching Guro Jason teach a class, I was very impressed with his knowledge of JKD/FMA. I was immediately blown away with his in-depth knowledge of several styles of Silat and Filipino Martial Arts. After almost a 10 year break from FMA training, I caught the “FMA-bug” again and decided that I cannot pass up this opportunity to train in Legacy. I was a little nervous and hesitant at first since I am still recovering from a foot injury, I did not have good stamina, and not having touched a Kali stick or knife in the last 10 years but decided that I have to train with Guro Jason and the Legacy adult group to reap the benefits and rewards that comes with training/learning with a bonafide FMA expert. After six months of training in Legacy, I am very glad and happy that I am now part of the Legacy brotherhood. Every time I go to class, I am impressed with Guro Jason’s ability to teach us effective simplified techniques and concepts that were time tested and proven in actual combat. Guro Jason’s ability to transition (empty hands and weapons) from each effective fighting range (long, medium, and close) is very impressive. Just as impressive is Guro Jason’s ability to breakdown footwork, techniques, and mindset so that each student could learn effectively. Guro Jason also puts a heavy emphasis on sparring so that each student could learn how and when to apply the lessons learned in class. Guro Jason’s approach to teaching goes above and beyond just learning moves and copying techniques. Guro Jason also emphasizes the mental aspect of FMA and abides by the old proverb of “give a man a fish you feed him for the day, teach a man how to fish and you feed him for a lifetime”. Training in Legacy will make you evolve to be a more well rounded martial artist as well as live a more balanced life in general.- Elmer

Preserving the Culture‎

I have been involved in martial arts (kenpo, aikido, kendo, European fencing and judo) for 30 years; Kali has been the most rewarding. Often seen in movies, ie 300 or Bourne Identity, Kali is not sensationalized and at times not credited. Legacy Martial Arts (LMA), based in Claremont, CA is a diamond in the rough! Amongst all the business driven martial arts organization, LMA is motivated by the need to preserve and share the culture of Filipino Martial Arts. Guro Jason no nonsense approach to apply the deadly but beautiful techniques of Filipino Martial Arts (submission Kali) as part of our everyday life is truly a compliment to help preserve the culture of the Philippines. Often misunderstood and not credited, Filipino Martial Arts is one of the most deadly and no-nonsense fighting styles in the world. LMA takes it to the next level and applies, simplifies, and recognizes the integration of other fighting styles into this art. This integration applies to real combat. This is not a sport, by word definition, but a way of life for some Filipinos for centuries. At LMA, you will learn, stick (baston), knife, and hand to hand fighting. You will also learn strategies on fighting theories and methods and how, when why to implement these strategies during a real life threatening situation- Arnelle

Dear Mr. Cruz, I recently referred a friend to you from my hospital in Rancho Cucamonga(sp). Needless to say after one free introductory evening lesson with you, he’s hooked, at least that is what I heard this morning (after he came back for your morning class) . He was so sold on the place that he actually went back in the morning. Wow, That speaks volumes of yourself and the studio environment you possess. Kudos to you! Based on his testimony, I am even more excited to come workout at your school. Thanks for all you do for the Martial Arts community. I really look forward to meeting you soon. Forever a student, Jay Brett P.S. Feeling good about my referral!!!

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 Kali Warriors – Great intro class for kids! -  Marie -Jul 21, 2009
My daughters LOVE their Kali Warriors Class! First impression I feared that it would be too physical or aggressive for my girls, but it is so far from that…only better! Guro Jason teaches focus, balance, discipline, and technique all in a fun loving and respectful environment. They perform obstacle courses, drills, learn about culture, and are taught mindfulness of your surroundings. They have become more confident with the physical and mental skills they have learned from Guro Jason. His training technique is great for kids. He introduces new skills often, while also placing emphasis on basic moves. With Guro Jeff and Guro Jason, they receive a lot of one on one instruction. Both Guros add the perfect amount of discipline, patience, and kindness. The kids respect them and listen very intently during class. This class is a great way to introduce kids into the world of martial arts without competitiveness and repetitive tasks. They learn so much more than you can imagine, along with having fun. Thank you Legacy!- Marie

A friend of mine, who is also training with Guro Jason, said to me, “You have got to check this out!” The next week I went to class and thinking I was in OK shape and I’ll learn a few moves and see how it goes – I figured I was going to do fine. In 10 minutes I realized I was far worse off than I thought – and that was just warming up before getting into any of the techniques. In the first class, I learned 4 defense moves along with stances and blocks and it was better and different from anything I expected. I was hooked. After that first day, my goal was to get in shape and have real world defense tools. That was 4 months ago. I am happy to say that I am in much better shape, stronger, and more confident. It has motivated me to continue working out at home with simple and effective methods from class. While I have only been going for a few months, the collection of defense and fighting moves I’m learning is awesome and is very different. You will see why special forces training include Kali methods. My wife and I have attended some of the special defense seminars held there at the studio and they have been great and we are looking forward future ones. I would recommend joining to anyone who wants to be in a challenging and fun environment that will undeniably impact your life in a positive way. …. Mind….. Heart….. Respect  Reed

Sign up for this class!- May 26, 2009-Matt

I was a mid 40′s guy struggling to stay motivated about keeping fit, when I happened upon Legacy in Claremont. Watching the instructor work with his students I became intrigued, I had often thought about some form of martial arts, but the “fast food/24 hour fitness” feeling of the studios kept me from pursuing anything. I agreed to come to a trial class, and now, a few weeks later I am a die hard. Already I am stronger, I have more stamina and best of all, I am motivated to keep at it. There are a couple of key reasons this class is special (i think, anyway). The first is the discipline itself, Kali is long on effectiveness and very short on formality and dogma. If you are a black belt in judo, and have a confrontation with a high school JV wrestler, there’s a good chance he’ll take you, if you are a Kali guy, you can not only counter his takedown, but have him blubbering for mercy while you control him with one hand and finish you’re beer with the other. The best thing about Legacy though, is the instructor. Jason won’t demand your respect, but he will get it very quickly, because he really, really knows what he’s doing, and he knows how to teach it. It’s obvious he lives and breathes this stuff, and wants to share his passion with others. Lucky us. Highly recommended! Matt

No Nonsense Martial Arts Training‎ – Leo‎ – May 19, 2009

I have studied Martial Arts on and off since 7 years old as well as incorporated weight training to my continuing studies. Not only does Guro Jason provide various exercise methods towards total fitness which will test your limits, Legacy goes beyond the physical aspect of training. Guro Jason has provided Martial Arts knowledge within the mental realm as well. You will not find the type of training methods Guro Jason provides, elsewhere. The training is consistant throughout and is as diverse as the students who come to train at the school. I have gained priceless knowledge in various filipino fighting methods. I feel like a complete Martial Artist with the fitness and methodology Legacy has to offer. I cannot say enough about the positive changes Legacy Martial Arts Studio has given to me- Leo

Great Training‎ – Samuel‎ – May 19, 2009

I’ve studied Tae Kwon Do, Judo, Jujitsu, Kenpo, Krav Maga, Muay Thai, and Sambo over the last 20 years. Legacy Martial Arts has revived my enthusiasm for training. The training sessions may be intense, but I love every minute of it. Guru Jason, the instructor, has a high-energy attitude and teaching style that keeps me going despite any pain or fatigue I may experience as a part of training. I highly recommend this school and its fighting philosophy to anyone serious about learning effective combat skills or for those just wanting to get fit.

This place is not like your average dojo where you repeat a kata all day long. It’s a modern school. They don’t wear those uniforms either. We learn practical defense. Class sizes are kept small and the instructor gives you personal attention almost as if it was a private lesson with a personal trainer. He seems to cater to each individual and works on your weakness. Great energy and you will sweat! Plan to be sore as well for a few days. We love it and are on our way to getting in the best shape of our lives!

This is a great school to learn ‘Pilipino Martial Arts’. The teachers and students are patient and polite to visitors. They are also knowledgeable on FMA and Pilipino culture. There is always someone to work stick or knife techniques with. The students stay active when learning; they don’t stand around and talk. If you’re a martial artist looking for an FMA school, than this is the place to come. Hope to see you there.
